Stamps (Philately)/pre-civil war stamps

I have about 30 envelopes with original letters from early 1860's with Washington 3 cent stamps. A few have 1857-1861 perforate but most have 1861-1862 Washington perforate rose and pink stamps. What is the value and should they be kept intact? Thanks, Mike

The 1857 and 1861 Washington three cent designs were used to produce more than a dozen different issues - some rare, and some common.  The differences between the rare and common stamps is subtle, and require direct examination for positive identification.  It would be better to keep the stamps affixed to the envelopes.
