Question
22kt gold stamp replicas...

what is the gold plate plated over?

i have read a few explanations
1.) base metal -  but it didn't say what type of metal -  ie, copper, aluminum, nickel, tin  etc...
2.) paper
3.) aluminum foil

thank you kc

Answer
Hi KC,
Most of the gold plated stamps have a paper base, some have the gold on an aluminium base. They were popular for many of the "French African" countries in the '80s.  Then there are many examples of so-called gold/silver replicas of US stamps, often on FDC, which have even less to do with philately.
