Question
Washington 2 ct coil
Washington 2 ct coil
Hi. Among a lot I bought at auction in Montreal, I found a strip of 3 of Washington 2 cent red coil, perf 8 1/2 , single watermark U S U but inverted . Does this add significantly as to its value? I know that other countries consider this an interesting element. thank you for any information you send me. Den

Answer
Den,

I am not aware of the position of the watermark having any significant effect on market value for US stamps.

The Expert's Book, by Paul W Schmid, which is all about these issues, pictures normal and reversed watermarks and implies that there is no significant difference except perhaps in the challenge of identification.

The Scott Specialized Catalog also makes no mention of watermark position in relation to value.
