Star Trek: The Next Generation - Douwd

Expert: Deran McKean - 10/24/2009

Question
If the enemy ship created by the Douwd was simply an "illusion" (as were his wife and house), how could its weapons damage the Enterprise?

Answer
Hello John -

Good question!  Apparently the Douwd has the ability to manipulate energy (and maybe space/time) on a massive scale as evidenced by his illusion damaging the Enterprise-D and his ability to target a specific race (the Husnock) from the trillions of life forms in the Galaxy, and wipe out every last one of them.

My guess is the energy was being fired by the Douwd himself, through his illusion, so that it looked like the enemy ship was shooting at the Enterprise.  His deception must have been very convincing as well if the Enterprise sensors didn't pick up anything other than a ship firing at them, and no 'diverted energy' from the planet.

Does that make sense?

Deran
