Star Trek: The Next Generation - Douwd

Expert: Deran McKean - 10/26/2009

Question
QUESTION: If the enemy ship created by the Douwd was simply an "illusion" (as were his wife and house), how could its weapons damage the Enterprise?

ANSWER: Hello John -

Good question!  Apparently the Douwd has the ability to manipulate energy (and maybe space/time) on a massive scale as evidenced by his illusion damaging the Enterprise-D and his ability to target a specific race (the Husnock) from the trillions of life forms in the Galaxy, and wipe out every last one of them.

My guess is the energy was being fired by the Douwd himself, through his illusion, so that it looked like the enemy ship was shooting at the Enterprise.  His deception must have been very convincing as well if the Enterprise sensors didn't pick up anything other than a ship firing at them, and no 'diverted energy' from the planet.

Does that make sense?

---------- FOLLOW-UP ----------

QUESTION: That makes sense. Although could the situation possibly be akin to a hologram?

When the Holo Doc is solid, he can physically hurt someone; when he's not, he can't.

I'm not sure what Picard meant when he called the Husnock ship an
"illusion." That can mean many things. I think the holodeck images (in EAF) were called something on the order of 'illusions.'

1) If the Pah-Wraiths can manipulate time, could a bunch of them team up and take over Nagilum?

I'm thinking they could, if Nagilum were of this dimension, made of matter/energy they could identify, etc. Since he is not of this dimension, even if the Pah-Wraiths can manipulate time much better than Nagilum, I still think they'd have no way of knowing how to control such a being.

2) Dax was killed by an energy surge that was directed from the Pah-Wraith-indwelled Dukat. What effect would the same surge have on the following?

A) Data
B) Excalbian
C) Spock
D) Worf
E) Odo
F) 8472
G) Borg drone
H) Gorn
I) Taurean
J) Danar
K) Admiral Quinn
L) Khan
M) Nomad
N) Apollo
O) Gary Mitchell
P) Armus
Q) Wolverine

If the Traveler could "hang out" with a person in the list for 5 hours, whom would he choose?

Which non-Starfleet person would he choose first?

Thanks for your well-wishes.

Answer
Hi John -

Yeah that's a good analogy.  When a hologram character in one of Worf's programs fires a phaser, obviously energy comes from somewhere and impacts the Starfleet officer.

1) I don't know if the Pah-Wraith can necessarily manipulate time, or just have a different perception of it like the Prophets.  Different episodes of DS9 have given conflicting information as to whether ornot the Prophets can affect time, so I just don't know.

2) Yeah from what I can determine she was just about instantly killed, but her much more vulnerable symbiont somehow managed to survive.  My guess is Jadzia's body somehow insulated the Dax symbiont from the effects of the energy surge, indicating that it couldn't have been electrical or electro-magnetic in nature, so I'm basing my assumptions on that:

A) Data - My guess is he would survive the surge since he survived the attack from the Calamarain, which I think would have vaporized a humanoid like Dax.

B) Excalbian - I would think so, they seemed to contain a vast amount of thermal energy inside themselves which indicates to me they could withstand a frightening amount of energy directed against them.

C) Spock - I think he probably could survive the attack, but it would take a long time for him to come out of the coma that resulted.

D) Worf - My guess is he'd survive but would suffer severe neural and system shock that would take him a while to recover from.

E) Odo - I think he would survive though I doubt he could control his physical shape for a period of time afterward.

F) 8472 - I don't see why one of them wouldn't survive, probably with some injuries, but otherwise intact.

G) Drone - It depends to a large extent on the native species of the drone and how much of their natural form had been replaced with cybernetics, but I would think an 'average' drone would survive with some repairable system damage.

H) Gorn - I think a typical Gorn would survive with moderate injuries.

I) Taurean - Probably a similar result at the Gorn.

J) Danar - I think he'd probably be killed or at the least injured to the point where he would eventually expire.

K) Quinn - Well if Jadzia's symbiont survived, I think the Bluegill (which is a cousin to the Trill symbionts) would probably make it, but Quinn wouldn't.

L) Khan - He'd probably be injured pretty badly, but would recover eventually.

M) Nomad - I think he'd survive and be just fine.

N) Apollo - If caught by surprise as Jadzia was, I think he'd die.  If he had time to erect a shield or something, he'd probably be okay.

O) Mitchell - I think he'd die just as Jadzia did.

P) Armus - I doubt the Dukat/Pah-Wraith blast would bother him too much.

Q) Wolverine - He'd probably go into a coma while his healing factor kicked into overdrive, but I think he'd survive.

Traveler - Probably Spock based on the interest the Traveler showed in Wesley and his conceptual skills.

Non-Starfleet - Probably Khan, again for his ability to conceptualize.

Hope that helps!
