Star Trek: The Next Generation - Torpedoes

Expert: Deran McKean - 10/20/2009

Question
What is the difference between photon torpedoes and quantum torpedoes?

Answer
Hi David -

Photon torpedoes use anti-matter within their detonation chamber and are thus marginally destructive based on the anti-matter load the weapon is carrying.

Quantum torpedoes use plasma in their warheads and are capable of a greater level of destruction, and the yield can be better controlled since plasma is a normal component of this universe and is not annihilated the way anti-matter is.

Initially the quantum torpedoes could take out a Borg Cube with a single shot and the oscillating shape of the plasma warhead made the weapons impossible for Borg shields to adapt to.

Hope that helps

Deran
