Star Trek: The Next Generation - Worf

Expert: Deran McKean - 10/23/2009

Question
Congratulations on reaching 1000 questions answered!

In Star Trek: First Contact, Worf argues with Picard on the bridge. He believes it's better to self-destruct the ship than to fight the Borg, which he assumes is hopeless.

Wouldn't a Klingon rather go down fighting? Wouldn't this bring honor (as opposed to opposing the captain, which presumably is not very honorable)?

If Odo or Data were in command instead of Picard, how would they react if Worf acted in the same way?

When Wesley was preparing for his Starfleet exam in the holodeck, he was trying to think of things that scare him. Worf entered, and said, "Only fools have no fear."

Does this mean that Worf thinks Data is a fool, or does his statement probably only apply to those who are capable of fearing?

Which character do you like more?

Answer
Thanks!

900 of them probably came from you so I should be thanking you!

A 'regular' Klingon probably would go down fighting, but Worf was not raised in the Klingon culture and has, on many occasions, shown difficulty accepting the ways of his people.  Also, even a 'regular' Klingon might rather self destruct the ship and sacrifice it to get rid of the Borg rather than be assimilated and have all sense of self, and future opportunity for honor, taken away.

Odo would probably cop an attitude and raise his voice, but I doubt he'd engage in fisticuffs.  Data would probably agree with Worf as there comes a point when further fighting would only result in more crew being assimilated and have no hope of saving the Enterprise.

My guess is Worf meant among beings capable of feeling fear.  Certainly he wouldn't hold it against Data that the android was incapable of such a reaction.

If forced to choose between Wesley and Kolrami I'd have to go with Wesley.  At least he wasn't an arrogant alien who insulted Data and Riker!

I'd also say I'd have to go with Chakotay over Kolrami as well.

I LOVE Jadzia!  She makes my heart go all a twitter!

Thanks!

Deran
