Star Trek: The Next Generation - virus

Expert: Deran McKean - 10/29/2009

Question
Let's say the Enterprise-D members are all "drunk" with the Naked Now virus when the beings in the list engage them. If the D members were laughing, acting silly, totally ignoring the entities, how would they each respond?

(For planetary situations, only the senior officers are involved.)

(Nobody in the list knows that a virus is the cause of the odd behavior.)

A) Douwd on his home planet
B) Organians on Organia
C) Nagilum in his void
D) Nomad
E) Romulan Warbird in Neutral Zone
F) Lore in shuttle
G) Apollo on planet
H) Caretaker
I) Edo god
J) Trelane on planet Gothos
K) Q (on ship)
L) Admiral Quinn
M) Original Enterprise (brought to future by weird space anomaly)
N) Traveler
O) Enhanced-Barclay
P) Visiting admiral
Q) Great Link
R) Armus

Why weren't photons or phasers at least tried against Nagilum? His void was not registering on their sensors, so isn't it conceivable that maybe those weapons might impact Nagilum or his void?

They had absolutely no frame of reference to go by, so not trying anything seemed unusual. Unless they just didn't want to risk losing more of their crew.

Answer
Hi John -

A) Douwd - I guess the Douwd would try and blend in, hide, otherwise remain hidden and, if engaged, would probably retreat and remove himself from the engagement area.

B) Organians - Unless the visitors posed a threat to the Organians or each other, my guess is their behavior (and them) would be ignored (sort of like locking the drunk relative on a major holiday in the back bedroom!)

C) Nagilum - I doubt the crew's state of inebriation would bother Nagilum and he would start killing them one by one to continue his own studies of death.

D) Nomad - I don't think he'd waste too much time with a drunken crew, just begin eliminating them.

E) Romulan - A smart Romulan commander would recognize that the behavior of the Starfleet crew was unusual and begin conducting analysis to see if whatever was going on on board the Ent-D could possibly affect his crew.

F) Lore - He'd board the ship and start designing programs within the main computer that he could use to basically take over the ship.

G) Apollo - He'd mete out punishment on the crew for their behavior and probably demand restitution in the form of services and/or worship.

H) Caretaker - My guess is he'd ignore the crew and conduct his scans to see if they 'had what he needed.'

I) Edo God - Again, unless they presented a direct threat to the God or the Edo people, I doubt the multi-dimensional being would care.

J) Trelane - He'd probably join right in the drunken festivities.

K) Q - I think he'd find the whole thing amusing and, if the situation required it or he got bored, he could sober the crew up with a snap of his fingers.

L) Quinn - He'd send out a call to all the other Bluegill symbionts hiding at the edge of know space to come and being taking over hosts.  Imagine an Enterprise crew where the entire senior staff was possessed!

M) Original Ent - Kirk's encountered the Naked Now virus before so I'd bet he'd immediately get Bones working on a modification of the original cure.

N) Traveler - I'd imagine he'd be pretty confused by what was going on and would use his telepathic abilities to help or at least stabilize the crew.

O) Barclay - Given his enhancements by the Cytherians, I'd imagine he could pump something into the Ent-D's ventilation system that might quickly erase the effects of the virus.

P) Admiral - Given the propensity for Starfleet Admirals to either be insane, or villains, my guess is he or she would take over the ship!

Q) Link - Immediate preparations would be made to imprison the senior members of the crew and replace them with Changelings.

R) Armus - I doubt he'd care one way or the other, torturing drunk humanoids would be just as fun for him as torturing sober ones.

Good question, I'd at least make an attempt to use the photons/phasers against Nagilum if for no other reason than to gauge his response and see what (if any) damage certain wavelengths of energy had against him.  Even if Nagilum was didn't register on the sensors, the material of his 'body' should have some kind of reaction to the weaponry which could provide some clues about his make up.

I guess Picard might have been afraid of losing more crew, but even a little information about how Nagilum reacted or didn't react to the anti-matter warhead of a photon would have provided something.

Thanks!

Deran
