Star Trek: The Next Generation - Armus

Expert: Deran McKean - 11/2/2009

Question
1) You stated that the Edo god would just destroy whoever tried to put it on trial.

If Q forced the Edo god on trial, would it keep its mouth shut, or would it yell and scream at Q? (I seriously doubt it would try to fight.)

2) In "Skin of Evil," Data says that Armus is capable of creating powerful forcefields, and that they cannot transport or communicate unless Armus allows it.

Why can't they use the Enterprise to offset Armus' abilities? Kind of like Kirk and company using the ship to offset Apollo's energy-manipulation abilities. The difference being, of course, that the original Enterprise had an actual target to fire at, whereas the D would have to do a more in-depth evaluation of Armus' powers.

3) If the Metrons decided to start using Vagra II for their "Arena" planet, but they told Armus not to interfere, how would Armus respond?

4) I doubt that 1 energy blast from Armus (same intensity that killed Yar) would kill Odo. But do you think this same blast would knock him out?

5) Given basic knowledge of the entities, but NOT how Captain Picard dealt with them, would the following captains rather face Armus or Nagilum?

A) Jellico
B) Kirk
C) Sisko
D) Riker (from "All Good Things")

6) When Lore planned on feeding the Enterprise to the Entity in
"Datalore," how exactly was he going to survive? Hide in a room and tell the Entity to stay away from there?

7) Why was Lore beamed into space at the close of the episode? Seems like it would be smarter to hold him in the brig, than to let him drift in space, where another race could be eventually harmed by him.

8) I realize now that Armus' energy blast certainly wouldn't kill Data, probably wouldn't knock him out. In "Disaster," Data survived a 500,000 amp arc of electricity, without even being knocked out. I seriously doubt Yar was hit with over 500,000 amps (equivalent), for I don't think Crusher could've put her on "life support" later in sickbay in that instance. Would you agree?

Answer
Hi John -

1) I agree, against Q I'd bet it would play the good little trial suspect, trying to analyze and detect a flaw in the logic of Q's charges against it.

2) Good question, given the ship's capabilities and the plethora of energy, matter and anti-matter contained within it, it seems to me that something could have been done.  In TOS Spock and Scotty were always coming up with ways to get around such problems!

3) I doubt Armus could help himself and, given his proclivities and his loneliness I'd bet he'd ignore the Metron's edict.

4) I think it would cause him to lose consciousness and/or his molecular cohesion, but no, since he doesn't have any organs, nervous system, or pulmonary system to shock, stop or liquify, I doubt the blast would kill him.

5) A) Jellico - Armus, in his arrogance he'd believe he could easily outsmart or take on a planetary bound entity.

  B) Kirk - Nagilum, Kirk has outsmarted and reasoned with gods, devils and everything in between and would believe he could do so with Nagilum as well.

  C) Sisko - Nagilum, for a similar reason as Kirk.  Sisko's gone up against Prophets, Pah-Wraiths, Changelings and I think he'd have a greater chance or reasoning with Nagilum than Armus.

  D) Riker - Nagilum, same reason.

6) My guess is Lore would stolen a shuttle craft and fled the ship just before the Entity's lunch time.

7) Excellent question!  With a being that malevolent and dangerous I'd have Geordi deactivate him and ship the components to several separate starbases, to leave him 'alive' is to take a huge risk with the lives of any of his future victims.

8) Absolutely, a jolt of something like 200 joules (equivalent to much less than 500,000 amps) is what emergency room crash carts use to stop and start the hearts of critical patients so, if Yar was hit with that much electricity, her body would liquify.

Thanks!

D. -
