Star Trek: The Next Generation - Spock

Expert: Deran McKean - 11/2/2009

Question
If Spock gave the "Live long and prosper" hand signal to the following, how would they react?

A) Douwd
B) Q
C) Metron
D) Organian
E) Data
F) Gorn
G) Admiral Quinn
H) Lore
I) Excalbian
J) Edo god
K) Caretaker
L) Trelane
M) Borg Queen
N) Holo Doc
O) Armus
P) Apollo
Q) Nomad
R) Enhanced-Barclay
S) Traveler
T) Worf
U) Danar
V) Nagilum

Since enhanced-Barclay claimed to know "everything," would he and the Guardian be at odds? (The Guardian believed the Federation's technology to be wholly inadequate to explain itself, so I'm thinking Barclay's pride in his intelligence might irk the Guardian. Though the Guardian might have more respect for Barclay, considering he's greatly smarter than even Data or Spock.)

Armus' composition was entirely unknown to the Enterprise. Could enhanced-Barclay soup up a tricorder in order to accurately determine his physiology?

Could enhanced-Barclay help to determine something (not necessarily everything) about Nagilum, Nagilum's void, Edo god, and the Guardian, by souping up the Enterprise's
tricorders/sensors?

Answer
Hi John -

A)  Douwd - I'd imagine he'd return the salute, hoping that in doing so he could pass as a human and get Spock to leave him alone more quickly.

B)  Q - He'd laugh and pretend he was having trouble making his fingers form into the 'quaint Vulcan custom'

C)  Metron - The Metrons didn't seem like complete jerks, so I'd bet one of them would return the salute.

D)  Organian - would return the salute.

E)  Data - same as the Organian

F)  Gorn - I have a Gorn action figure on my desk at work and it looks like their fingers are already in the 'live long and prosper' salute so I'd bet a Gorn might be flattered!

G)  Quinn - He'd pretend to return the salute while the Bluegill controlling him plotted the means by which their kind were going to infiltrate the Vulcans.

H)  Lore - He'd return the greeting and try to ingratiate himself with the Vulcan.

I)  Excalbian - Probably probe the Vulcan's mind to learn the origin of that particular greeting.

J)  Edo God - Completely ignore the Vulcan unless he or she threatened an Edo.

K)  Caretaker - Would immobilize and probe the Vulcan to see if he or she had what the Caretaker 'needed.'

L)  Trelane - He seemed pretty curious about alien life forms (humans in particular) so I'm sure he'd give the salute a try.

M)  Borg Queen - She'd inject the Vulcan with assimilation nanoprobes.

N)  Holo Doc - I'd bet he'd return the greeting.

O)  Armus - would probably wave his arm and kill the Vulcan, but only if he or she were a major character on the show who had to die for no reason and then be resurrected so that SHE could die a more noble death with 'purpose.'

P)  Apollo - He'd laugh and demand the Vulcan get on their knees before him.

Q)  Nomad - He'd erase the Vulcan's mind as he did to Uhura.

R)  Enhanced-Barclay - He'd dismiss the Vulcan immediately as he had more important things to do like building technology that had never existed in the Federation.

S)  Traveler - He'd return the greeting as best as his hand structure allowed him to.

T)  Worf - He'd grunt and give that slight nod he usually utilized when greeting others.

U)  Danar - He'd adopt a reflexive defense stance and nod in the Vulcan's direction while his eyes searched their hands and person for weapons.

V)  Nagilum - He'd say "What is this primitive greeting?  Explain!"

No, Barclay didn't know everything, he knew more than his human mind could possibly conceive of, but he didn't know everything and I'm thinking the Guardian would scoff at such arrogance.

I think an enhanced Barclay probably could upgrade a normal tricorder to that it could read what Armus was constructed of, but making sense of the 'recipe' might be hard.  I can tell you that a fancy wedding cake is constructed of flour, sugar, water and eggs, but I certainly couldn't replicate one!

I think Barclay could tweak the sensors and instruments so that they could reveal more about Nagilum and the Edo God, but again is would probably just be a read out of their component molecules not necessarily what made them 'tick.'

Thanks!

Deran
