Question
If all of the crewmembers of the Enterprise-D were simultaneously replaced with 1000 members of the following species, how long would it take them (if at all) to learn how to operate the ship, at least on a rudimentary level?

A) Krenim
B) Borg
C) Kelvans
D) Species 8472
E) Changelings
F) Organians
G) Metrons
H) Soong-type androids (no Datas)
I) DS9 Augments
J) Ferengi
K) Romulans
L) Armus and clones
M) 1000 Calamarain
N) Klingons
O) Hirogen
P) Ocampa
Q) Cytherians
R) Nomad and clones
S) Dauphin beasts
T) Darmok beasts
U) Harry Mudd and clones
V) Travelers

Answer
Hi John -

A)  Krenim - they seemed to be a pretty advanced race and I'd bet they could figure out most of the primary systems within a seven to ten days.

B)  Borg - Given their ability to quickly assimilate and incorporate new technologies, I'd say that within 24 hours they'd pretty much have the Enterprise figured out.

C)  Kelvans - They seemed to have the original Enterprise figured out within a matter of hours and I'd bet could do the same with the D.

D)  8472 - I doubt it would take them more than five to ten hours.

E)  Changelings - Probably less than 24 hours.

F)  Organians - Actually it probably wouldn't take them any time at all.

G)  Metrons - probably the same as the Organians

H)  Androids - Probably a matter of only a few hours.

I)  DS9 Augments - Most likely they could figure it out within a few hours as, apparently Khan's group was able to figure out the Reliant in ST II.

J)  Ferengi - Probably only a few hours as their level of tech seems fairly close to that of Starfleet.

K)  Romulans - Probably the same, or an even shorter period of time, than the Ferengi.

L)  Armus - I didn't get the impression Armus was particularly technical, otherwise he could have begun working on some type of ship to ferry him away from the planet he was stuck on.  So, at a guess I'd say it would take him a considerable time, maybe even years to figure out the operation of the ship.

M)  Calamarain - Similar to Armus, I'd bet they might have a real hard time with mechanics and hardware that imitates what they are able to do naturally.

N)  Klingons - Probably only a matter of hours.

O)  Hirogen - same as the Klingons or Romulans

P)  Ocampa - Probably might take them a little while longer than the Ferengi as they didn't seem to be extremely technically savvy.

Q)  Cytherians - Probably only a matter of minutes.

R)  Nomad - Probably only a matter of a few minutes

S) Dauphin Beasts - I'd imagine it would take them centuries to evolve into a form with a sufficient enough capacity to understand the mechanics of the ship.

T) Darmok Beasts - same as the Dauphin beasts.

U) Mudd - he actually was a lot smarter than he let on so I'd bet he could figure it out in a matter of a few hours.

V) Travelers - Probably wouldn't take any time at all.

Thanks!

Deran
