Question
I have few questions about Darth vader's confrontation with obi wan in episode 4, Darth vader speaks of presence he hasn't felt in many years. Is that obi wan or does he sense his son Luke? Also, why does obi wan want to confront darth vader after all those years? The emperor and vader seem very clever so wouldn't it make more sense to take obi wan alive and question him about the rebellion. What exactly does obi mean when he warns vader that if he is killed he will come back a thousand times stronger. If that's the case you would think Vader would hesitate about fightin him.

Answer
Hi there!
I think the majority of your questions can be cleared up pretty simply. Let me see...
To begin with, the presence Vader refers to is usually thought of as being Obi Wan. Vader at this point in the series isn't actually aware that he has any children. At the end of Revenge of the Sith, Sidious tells him that he killed Padme, which would lead him to assume that his child is also dead (since he was also unaware that she was carrying twins). The children were then hidden from him and he discovered Luke was his son only after Luke destroyed the first death star.

Obi Wan confronts Vader to keep him and the other forces on the base distracted so that Luke, who he thinks is the last hope of the Jedi, can escape on the falcon with Han and Leia.

It does make sense that the Sith should want to capture Obi Wan. Why don't they? Well it seems to me that they do in fact try. Vader does battle with Obi Wan to keep him occupied until stormtroopers can capture him, but when they arrive, the two are enmeshed in battle and just watch. Silly Stormtroopers... Obi Wan knows his goose is cooked no matter what and just wants to give Luke and the others enough time to escape. He happens to be putting up enough of a fight and is annoying Vader enough that Vader wouldn't mind him being dead.

Obi Wan, when he tells Vader he'll get stronger if he's struck down is referring to his becoming one with the Force. It's sort of a, "No matter what you do to me, I'll go to a better place, so it doesn't matter," kind of thing.

Vader calls his bluff, wins the fight, strikes him down, and is understandably spooked when Obi Wan's body vanishes. It's hard to say what Vader was thinking at that moment, because a certain dumb farm boy screamed and attracted the attention of everbody he was trying to escape from. Oh well! At least they got away. That is unless you sympathize with the Empire...

I hope these tidbits have been helpful! Let me know if you have any further questions! I'd be happy to help.
May the Force be with you!
