AboutLauren Gilkey Expertise I consider myself an expert because not only have I watched the movies repeatedly, but I consider myself a "purist" in the sense that I've read the books, but I only accept certain books as belonging to the true story. For example, the books written after "Vision of the Future" by Zahn I do not count as authentic storyline. My areas of specific expertise are: Jedi history, Han Solo, and bounty hunters.

Question Your take on the meaning of "The Phantom Menace"? When I was a child I just assumed it was Darth Maul. But having thought about it years later, I have to think it means Anakin. When they picked him up they didn't know the damage he'd cause-making him a menace, but a phantom one. I'd like to hear an experts thoughts.
Answer Dear Gerbs,
What a thoughtful question! I've rarely had such a thoughtful question.
Darth Maul does seem like the obvious choice for who the Phantom Menace is. However, he is the obvious villian, which prevents him from being a Phantom.
I can see your reasoning why Anakin would be the other meance. At first glance, he seems innocent and the answer to everything. Its only if you know what he will become do you see him as a phantom threat.
However, I'm going to offer you a third alternative. Why not Darth Sidious/Senator Palpatine? Episode 1 is really about a distant, unseen turmoil. Something is wrong and people know it, but they can't figure out exactly what or where it is. The true threat of the Dark Side is right in front of them, masquerading as someone benevolent and kind.
My vote is for Darth Sidious/Senator Palpatine, especially with the funeral scene at the end where the camera shifts from Anakin to Senator Palpatine.
