Question
Dear Brack Valmar:

I consider myself a Star Wars Fan.  After watching the last three episodes (Star Wars IV, V, VI) I noticed the Dark Side or Evil Empire is way to sloppy in attacking the
Rebel Forces.  Clearly the Empire has so much fire power  amazing weapons, and big army but why do the Rebel forces always manage to escape?  They captured Luke, Leia, and Han Solo in each episode but they wait to kill them?  Why do they do this?  I know Luke mentioned that their weakness is overconfidence.  Clearly the Empire has a lot of arrogance.  I know in the Empire Strikes Back Leia and Han Solo are used as bait but throughout the movie The Empire faced set back after set back by not capturing/ defeating key enemies.  You would think that a some point it would be a clear blitz and decisive victory for the Empire.

Also, after watching the movies Vader seemed to be a weak commander.  He appears to miss many of his military objectives.  I thought he was commanding and dominating in
Star Wars IV because he actually used lethal force in destroying an entire planet and killing Obi Wan.

Thank you so much for your time and patience,

Sincerely,

A.R.

Answer
Well, in A New Hope, Leia isn't killed immediately because the Empire knows of her involvement in the rebel alliance and is hoping to learn from her where their base is. That said, once they are aware she has escaped, they allow her to escape with Luke and Han in the hopes that they can follow them to the rebel base. In other words, they let the smaller prize of one or two rebels go in order to wipe out the entire rebel organization. Their plan failed, but mainly because they underestimated the rebel's ability to destroy the death star. In Empire, you're right to point out that Han and Leia are being used as bait. Vader doesn't actually kill Luke for a couple of reasons. Primarily, the emperor told him to try to turn Luke to the dark side. Also, Luke is Vader's son. It's a combination of Vader's scant remaining compassion and his obedience to his master. Luke is also stronger than he anticipates, and he manages to escape cloud city. Finally, in Return of the Jedi, when Luke is captured when he turns himself in, the emperor again tries to turn him to the dark side. In the end, it is the empire's combination of overconfidence in their superior technology and fighting power over the rebel's careful planning and moral superiority that is the empire's downfall. Hope that answers your question!
May the Force be with you.
