Starting a Small Business - Bank loans for a start-up

Expert: John A. Troland - 10/22/2009

Question
I have just incorporated myself/my business and will be starting work on a contract I just signed recently.  I need a very small loan in order to help buy equipment needed for the home office (where I'll be doing the work).  The loan is approx. $2-4,000.  Unfortunately, my credit is terrible, and I am fairly certain I could not secure a loan by simply applying for a credit card or a conventional loan.  Does anybody in the bank have the ability/discretion to make a decision based on other factors?  In other words, if I presented the signed contract that amounts to nearly a million dollars over the next five years, and also showed them documents demonstrating my work/salary history and other 'confidence builders', is there any chance that they could make a judgement call and not go primarily off my credit score?  If so, who is generally the person in the bank to speak to?  The president?  The business relations manager?

Regards,
Scott
