Starting a Small Business - liability issues for cookie business

Expert: Kelly MacVean - 11/10/2009

Question
what type of insurance should I carry for a cookie business that is basically being run out of my house for now?

Answer
Dear Nancy,

First of all, you need to check with your local health department since in most areas you are not allowed to sell baked/cooked food unless it is prepared in a health department approved stainless steel kitchen.

Once you know the answer to whether you can bake and sell from your home, check with an insurance agent that handles small business insurance with regard to their recommendatons for the applicable insurance for your particular business venture.  At the very least you will need business liability insurance.

Best of luck,
Kelly
