Question I just received my contractors license from the state of California for air conditioning and heating. I have taken some of the steps to get started. I have a EIN #, a legal DBA, and a business banking account. But I feel as if I'm hitting a brick wall as far as any financing or start up loans go because my personal credit is not very good. I'm very skilled in my trade and have started establishing a solid customer base, but I am unable to expand due to start up capital. I would appreciate any direction you can give me to move forward with my dream.
Answer Dear Jeremy,
In these trying economic times it is even more difficult than usual to obtain business financing, especially with questionable credit. Following are my suggestions for putting yourself in the best possible position for approaching lenders.
I would suggest you start by going to the SCORE.org website, reading all the small business start-up information there and then download and complete the Business Plan as it pertains to your particular business. This Plan is absolutely crucial and required when approaching any potential lender. It will require time, research and motivation to complete, but it will also be the number one step in moving forward with having a successful business.
After preparing your Business Plan then I would talk with a SCORE volunteer (usually located with your local Small Business Administration offices or Chamber of Commerce offices, and their counseling services are free). After you have met with a SCORE counselor, they will best be able to direct you to potential lenders in your area. I would also suggest (once you have your Business Plan) that you contact your local Small Business Administration office as they work with small businesses in helping to secure financial assistance.
