About Mike McGibney
Expertise
I can answer questions about individual members of the band or their vast array of session musicians, or about ANY song, even the extremely rare/unpublished. I can help with musical aspects such as chords/instruments used or with style of playing or about the history behind the band and in particular, Donald Fagen and Walter Becker, the bands writers/arrangers.

Experience
I am a huge Steely Dan fan, and have my own website on them. I also have a Steely Dan tribute band, and saw the real Steely Dan play at Wembley in 2000. I play all their music on bass and piano, and specialise in hard to get songs, mostly on mp3 format.

Organizations
I play keyboards and do the arranging and transcriptions for a Steely Dan tribute band, and am a regular member on forums on the band throughout the internet.

Steely Dan - dirty work

Expert: Mike McGibney - 5/28/2003

Question
Hi Michael.  My favorite Steely Dan song is Dirty Work. I believe the singer on this song did not sing on any of the other songs. Could you tell me why this was?  Any insight would be appreciated.  Thank you, take care.

Jack

Answer
Hey Jack

You're right! The singer is David Palmer, who was with the Dan briefly during the recording of "Cant Buy A Thrill". He lent his voice to several songs on this album, mostly backing, but he was their prominant live singer on tour at this time, as Fagen wasnt comfortable singing, especially live. They got rid of him by "Countdown to Ecstacy" because of several issues, one including alcohol [and quite possibly drug] abuse.

He used to wear incredibly tight trousers - such was the style at the time, with no underwear, and there are several amusing stories of gigs where, after one too many drinks, he would be a bit over-zealous and split his trousers, once splitting them right down the back and showing a naked backside to the audience.

Hope this answered your question, any more, just mail back!

Regards

Mike

PS  Have you heard the 2000 tour version of dirty work? It's the three backing singers doing it, very sexy. Go here to download the mp3 of it
