Question I am trying to re assemble a steering column someone else took apart. everything behind the lock plate seems to be in order. but when i go to put the steering wheel back on, it still has a gap and is very loose. it is like it's catching on the splines about a 1/2 inch from where it is supposed to stop.
Answer It sounds like the lock plate is not seated all the way down and the lock ring is not in place, you should have left over a ring about a half inch in diameter, that you will need to fix this problem, also go to the parts store and rent a lock plate depression tool to hold the lock plate down while you install the ring, you can buy the ring at the dealer for next to nothing. Please let me know if I can help you further, i will be glad to explain exactly how to do it.
