Question
Hi Bonnie,

I am trying to add a lower back strengthening exercise to my routine (free weights at home).  I am in good shape overall, so don't worry about all that stuff.  I was trying to decide on which deadlift exercise is the best for my lower back (*I do NOT want to build bulk though but need some extra strengthening there . . . I put all my weight on in my mid-section, so know the lower back is important to workout -- I also do a lot of pilates and cardio).

I definitely have settled on the deadlift after reading a lot and when I look at the other exercises in my routine as a whole, etc.  I just see so much conflicting information about which one I should be doing -- absolute opposite information actually.  Working the butt and hamstrings would be good as well to target, but are secondary to my main goal of working the lower back.

Please tell me which one you recommend:
1 -- Deadlift with bent knees (back seems straight, no other version)
2 -- Straight/stiff leg deadlift (back is not straight)
3 -- Straight/stiff leg -- straight back deadlift

Thank you so much!  This will complete my routine.

Answer
Hi Cheryl,
Thank you for your question.
I have used all three of these variations of the deadlift and my preference is the straight leg/straight back deadlift.I have found that I get the most results doing this deadlift.
What I also do sometimes to make it even harder is I put a 10lb plate underneath my toes and get a great stretch in my hamstrings.
Good luck-thank you,
Bonnie
