Question
Dear Joe,

I am 21 and have been strength training on and off for seven years now. I have never got the gains that I think I should be for how much effort I put into exercising in spite of exercising regularly for months at a time. I am taking L arginine before my work outs and muscle milk immediately after. Recently I have seen a lot of Nitric oxide boosters advertised, which claim to improve strength during the work out and muscle growth. Are products that do this safe, and are they effective. If not is there any other supplement that can help maximize the gains from my workouts? Besides creatine, which makes me too lethargic to exercise.
Thanks for you time.

Answer
Hi Matt, I am old school and do not recommend any supplements other than extra protein for athletes and hard strength training. No evidence to support any of them other than creatine for certain types of workouts.  I suggest you work with a personal trainer certified by the NSCA (nsca-lift.org) for a while to see what you are doing and get you on the right track.
