Strength Training - Toning abs

Expert: Bonnie Hardie - 6/20/2008

Question
Hello. I'm a female in my twenties, and I am not overweight but would like to improve the appearance of muscle tone in my abs and make that part of my body flatter. I have heard many conflicting things about ab exercises, including that there is no way to have nice abs unless you're genetically predisposed to it. I hope that's not true! I don't want a six-pack, just a flat stomach with no extra flab.

So what can I do? Is it true that crunches and sit-ups are useless?

Answer
Hi R.
Thank you for your question.
Crunches and situps are not completely useless.
Sit ups are not a very effective exercise to tone the abs because they do not isolate the abdominal muscles-they bring the hip flexors into the exercise. Crunches are good-but the most important aspect to achieving a flat abdominal region is your diet.
More carbs and protein-less fat and sodium. You should eat 5-6 small meals a day.
Carbs-pasta,rice,potatoes,etc. protein-lean turkey,tuna,etc.Some good abdominal exercises are:
crunches
leg lifts
toso twists
knee ups.
Thank you-let me know if I can be of any more assistance to you,
Bonnie
