Question
QUESTION: Hi Joe,3 or 4 times a week a do 30mins bike,30mins treadmill and 30mins crosstrainer and then do about half an hour weights,I would like to up my running time, slowly.
Somebody told me this is to much cv but I think it is good for my stamina and my mind, eventually I would like to work upto 1 hour of running, what do you suggest.

ANSWER: Hi Dave, as a former marathoner I am a little biased.  I love running and it is great for the cardiovascular system.  You appear to be doing plenty of aerobic work and the additional running will probably not hurt you...although from an orthopedic standpoint, it is not the best and you will be a little high on the aerobic end.  I would run 3 days a week and bike on alternate days when you do your strength training. I would drop the crosstrainer.

QUESTION: Cheers Joe,got to admire you for marathon,I would love to do some day but I am shattered after 1/2 hour, how do you do it? did you mean when I run 3 days, just do the running and then do bike and weights on same days? How on earth do you manage to run a marathon,I think my mind would give up before my body, whats the secret?

Answer
Hey Dave, yes that is what I meant.  Current recommendations by ACSM and other national organizations say we should do aerobic exercise 5-6 or most days of the week for 30-45 minutes.  3 days jogging and 3 days of other (biking) is a good mix.....marathons are all about the long run once a week...start out easy and gradually add a mile or therabouts each week to the long run and you build up to it. In a marathon the first 20 miles is a piece of cake and the last 6 separates the men from the boys....good luck
