Strength Training - proper breathing

Expert: Bonnie Hardie - 7/11/2008

Question
Dear Ms. Hardie,

My question has to do with whether there is a correct way to breathe depending on what type of exercise I am doing. I have several exercise DVDs, and sometimes the instruction is to breathe in through the nose and out through the mouth, but other times the instruction is to breathe in and out through the nose.  Is there a difference or does it depend on whether I am doing cardio, strength, pilates or yoga?

Answer
Hi Cathy,
Thank you for your question.
The proper way of breathing when you doing weight training is to exhale on the exertion.
When you are doing cardio you should inhale thru the nose and exhale thru the mouth.
Pilates and yoga should also be inhale thru the nose and exhale thru the mouth.
Thank You,
Bonnie
