Question
A lot of people have told me that pyramids are good for building muscle.  Others have told me that they are a waste of time and bad for your body. What is your opinion about benching pyramids?

Answer
Hey Brian,  there are  in fact several types of pyramid routines but they all have the advantage of recruiting a large number of motor units (muscle fibers) and that is what we are trying to do to build muscle.  I have used them in the past and still use them from time to time.  The key is not to stick to the same type routine very long because your muscles adapt very quickly and gains become minimal. I still like to cycle different routines...3-4 sets of 15 for 4-5 weeks, then 3-4 sets of 10 for 4-5 weeks, then 5 sets of 5, and on down...all depending om what your goals are.  Go to www.nsca-lift.org for good info on strength training....Joe
