Strength Training - cardiovascular exercises

Question
Hello, i need some advice on cardiovascular workouts for a thirteen year old. Do you have any suggestions?

Answer
Hello Benjamin, assuming there are no medical conditions that limit the choice of exercise, any activity (swimming, jogging, biking, eliptical, etc) where he or she can get their heart rate up to the 60-80% range of their max HR and sustain it for 30-40 minutes, after working their way up to that amount of time.  I use the treadmill for a lot of my clients and have them start with intervals of jogging and walking...walk 5 mins at a brisk pace to warm up and then start jogging until their HR gets in that range and do 1,2,3..etc minutes jogging followed by 1,2,3, minutes walking. How long you start with depends on your initial conditioning level.  Some can only jog for a minute or less and their HR gets above 80%.  Others can jog for several minutes or more before getting there. Just start easy with whatever activity you choose and work your way up.
