Question Hi Bonnie.
I'm 3 months into recovering from anorexia. Strength training has been great for adding healthy weight and getting me to eat more calories. I've built back muscle in my thighs, butt, arms, and abs.
However, if I'm correct, muscle burns calories and raises your basal metabolic rate, or calories you maintain on. I'm 17 years old, 6'0", and I'm not sure about my weight (I have been weighed, but I like to not know as it is triggering) and I usually eat 1800 calories. How do I know when to raise my calories and by how much due to my muscle gain?
Answer Hi Kelly-thank you for your question.
At your age and height, you should probably be eating about 2400-2500 calories a day.
Since you are eating 1800 calories a day right now-gradually(about 100 cal a week)increase your daily calories.
Since you don't want to weigh yourself, you should check your measurements every two weeks.
When you gain about 1/4 inch on your abs-then increase your calories.
Good job on the recovery-keep up the good work!!!
Thank you-good luck,
Bonnie
