Question I'm about 250 lbs, 6 foot, and have been in Martial arts for about 2 years now. My lower body is fit as can be, I can leg press about 600 lbs, but my upper body has no strength what so ever. I can't do 1 push up, and I have no Idea on how to increase my upper body stretch. Fortunately, I have full access to a gym, so equipment isn't a problem for me. How should I go about increasing my arm strength if I can't even do 1 push up?
Answer If you can't do 1 push up, then you are not "as fit as can be" regardless if its your legs or body. Legs are typically the stronger muscle group because they are larger muscles and are made for power. If you are having trouble with your push-up, its not arms you lack, but chest muscles and shoulders and triceps (back of arm). I suggest you start performing an upper body routine 2x week at your gym. Hook up with a staff trainer or partner and run through some machines for upperbody. Each week, try to perform 1 GOOD push-up from the floor. If you have trouble, begin on all 4's and perform a push-up like that. It is better to start slow and gradually perfect your form, then to perform sloppy push-ups. If you need more info, check out www.standapartfitness.com for articles and videos of such. Hope this helps!
