Subject: pilates vs strength training

Question
I am a 40 year old female. I run about 50 minutes 4-5x/week on a treadmill (about 4 miles each workout). I am interested in losing fat /gaining strength. I'm about 10 lbs overweight and cannot seem to make a dent in the loss department.   I have a choie of pilates ($130 assesment and $30 each class) or a personal trainer ($120 assesment and $60.00 for each 55 minutes session).  Any thoughts on which would be best combined w/my current running regimine for losing weight / toning up / looking better?  I do have problems with a hamstring and lower back aches---and running is probably not the best for me!  How many days a week is pilates necessary to notice a difference?  Would 2 days a week be enough?

Answer
I think a majority of your problems may come from nutrition. ALso....how long have you been runningfor 50min? You can be at a plateau. Nutrition wise...you should evaluate what you are eating and how much. You may be eating too little and your body is responding by "holding on" to fat. I woudl cut back on the running (2-3days) and engage in 2 days of strength training. I would go with a GOOD personal trainer. You can find more info at my website: www.standapartfitness.com
