Stress Management - depression

Expert: David Spector - 9/23/2009

Question
how can depression affect my body?

Answer
malenny, Thank you for your question.

This can be a complex topic. For a specific and detailed answer, do a Web search. Wikipedia may also have a great deal of detailed information.

In general, depression is not yet well understood. It is clear that one of its principal components is imbalance in neurotransmitters, the chemicals that mediate the transmission of neuronal impulses in the synaptic gap between two neurons in the brain and in the neural ganglia of the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems. Neurotransmitters can be in imbalance due to insufficient generation or insufficient dissipation (breakdown) by reuptake inhibitors and other mechanisms.

But perhaps you are looking for a simpler explanation: depression, like other forms of stress, use up energy resources and compromise the immune system. These general effects can cause, potentiate, or trigger many different kinds of stress-related illnesses.

Current therapeutic thinking is that minor depressions caused by life events (such as the death of a loved one) benefit from exercise, the support of friends and family, and proactive types of talk therapy. More serious or lasting depressions should be treated by antidepressant medicines, talk therapy, or both.

Although not a treatment for depression, Transcendental Meditation and its alternative Natural Stress Relief Meditation are effective in reducing stress in general. Research has shown that they produce immediate and lasting reduction in anxiety, improved health, and increased enjoyment of activities.

I hope this brief answer has helped. Please feel free to submit follow up questions, if needed.
