Question
Hello Ian: I am planning to buy a 2001 Subaru Forester (Canada) but am having a debae with my husband regarding automatic or standard transmssion.  I am a confirmed standard lover (my current car is a 16 year old standard VW Jetta), he says the automatic will be safer and the standard is not really as necessary due to the all wheel drive, braking system, etc. My driving is both city and country, and we contend with a lot of dicey winter driving - ice, snow, etc. any thoughts or comments?  Thanks

Answer
Maggie,
I am also a fan of manual transmission because of its better fuel economy and better acceleration. Manual is also a very good thing to have in winter conditions. For example: Second gear start, the ability to slow down by shifting instead of braking, and a couple other little things. Another great thing about Subaru's manual transmission is the "hill holder clutch". This allows you to use the clutch as a brake when starting on hills. I hope this info helped your descision.
Thanks,
Ian
