Question
What do you like about this 2001 forester?
Recommend the L or the S?
What is best for the buck?

Problems you see with the forester?

Answer
Steve,
The nice thing about the 2001 forester is that it comes with a rear limited slip differential. I also like the new body style more than the previous years. Both the L and the S come with the same 165hp 4cyl.If you feel like waiting another year, subaru is suposed to add a V-6 to its engine line up. The S model comes with larger rims for better handling. My father owns a 99 forester L and he loves it.  The only down side i see is that the Forester has what is called a boxer engine and the mechanic must take the entire engine out to do work that wouldn't normally require the engine to be removed. The subaru L would be my choice for best value. If you looking for something with all the extras like leather, grill guard, and larger rims then go with the S. Hope this helps.
Thanks,
Ian
