Subject: 94 Legacy doesn't start

Question
I have a 1994 Legacy and sometimes it will not start, the lights/radio work. It starts the 1st thing in the morning, so far, but sometimes after the 2nd or 3rd or 7th or 8th start of the day it will not turn over. If I wait 10 or 15 minutes then it usually starts. I've had the car just over 2 years and in the 1st year and half it did this about 6 times now it is doing it more often, twice today. What should I try?
Thanks Matt

Answer
Hey Matt,

If you here a "click" instead of it turning over I would suspect the starter contacts are worn. If there is no noise at all then I would suspect that either the ignition switch is not providing a signal to the starter or that there is a problem with the starter engaging or there is excessive voltage drop across the battery cables.

If you have the ability I would start with checking power to the start side of the starter with a volt ohm meter or at least a test light while someone is trying to start the vehicle.

If there is power than change the contacts or buy a starter,  if there is no power you will have to trace the power loss.  The most common thing being the electrical portion of the ignition switch if there is a power loss to the start side of the starter.

Note: Always use caution when playing around with your Subaru Legacy's electrical system.
