Question
Hello, I have a 1999 subaur legacy L AWD 2.2L. My speedometer only works when it wants to. I have also noticed that when the speedometer doesn't work neither does the odometer. I guess I must have a short in the wiring. How do I get to the cable? Do I have to pull the whole dash apart? And where does the cable go to? Is it easily accessible? Thanks Tracey

Answer
Hey Tracey,

You don't have a speedo cable its all electric with a speed sensor.

The 1999 Subaru Legacy and Subaru Legacy Outback, have common issues with the speedometer unit it self in the cluster. And since you didn't mention a check engine light I can only assume the speed sensor is ok. Simply take the cluster out of the dash, remove the speedo and install a new one but remember the odometer will now be off so you will want to have documentation of all of this and a sticker installed on the door jamb.

Justin
