Subject: 96 Outback intermittently won't start when warm

Question
I have a 96 Outback with 220K miles.  The car will start fine in the morning, but sometimes in the afternoon or after driving around town for a while it will turn over but will not start. I had the Crank Sensor replaced but the problem persists intermitantly. It always starts up the next morning though.

Answer
Hey Glen,

You mentioned that the crank sensor was replaced but there is actually a cam and crank sensor update kit available from Subaru.

Part # 22090 AA000

This is what should have been installed.

There are a few other possibilities such as the coolant temp sensor or a faulty mass air flow sensor.

The car is very fixable but will most likely have to be diagnosed by someone who is familiar with Subaru and local to you.
