Subject: 92 legacy timing issue

Question
I am working on a 92 legacy with the 2.2 SOHC engine.  Is this an interference engine and could you get the cams out of phase with each? The engine will not start and occasionally backfires through the intake.  It appears to be sucking and blowing air out of the intake.  This engine came out of a salvage yard and I don't know how long it sat.

Answer
Hey Brad,

The 1992 2.2l is a non interference engine.

The cams can easily become out of time in an accident if the timing belt jumps.

It is very easy to check this by removing the timing covers and this should have been done prior to the engine being put in as a new timing belt should always be done on a used engine swap.
