AboutMatt Maguire Expertise I am new to allexperts, but have plenty of knowledge and experience in the realm of Sublime. Guarantee: you will receive an answer within 2 days of posting the question -- I have no feedback so far and would like to build some.
I can answer most questions about the band, the significance of the lyrics, the show dates,
the unreleased albums and tracks, misinformation, and, above all, I am an expert on their
influences and related music.
Experience I have been a huge fan for 14 years, I ran a server which distributed Sublime's live and unreleased music 24/7 for 4 years, I have answered questions about the band daily for years on their old website, and I know some of the largest collectors in the world. I created the 5 CD bootleg "Rewind Selector" which documents the influences of Sublime and was the topic of a Spin Magazine interview.
Education/Credentials I did not study music in college, but I majored in English, so I can write a clear response. I worked as a research assistant in the past, so I have skills in research if I need to figure out an answer.
Past/Present Clients Sublime fans aren't my clients, but I have distributed swag and rare tracks to all those who want them for years at no cost.

Question Hi! Long time reader, first time questioner. I know that many of Sublime's songs were covers and/or reworkings of samples. I was wondering about the origins of two particular songs: New Realization and Don't Push. Were these songs written by members of Sublime or are they covers? I'm curious about both songs since I have only ever found the Second Hand Smoke version or New Realization and in "Don't Push" when Brad sings "439-0116" I wonder if this was ever his actual phone number? Thanks so much!!

I won't hold it against you that you cheated and asked two questions in one message since you're a long time reader. Just make sure you give me a good rating! ;)
First the phone number: I can not only tell you that it was his number, I can tell you the area code. The phone number in Don't Push; "...When you're down with Sublime you get funky fresh lyrics." The area code for that number in Long Beach is 562. Someone had that number a few years ago and would chat about Brad and Sublime if you called. I can't guarantee that anymore and ask that people don't call it (it's been many years). And if you ignore me and call it -- remember that they're 3 hours behind east coast time, so don't call in the morning!
As for the songs...you can look it up! I created a 43 page document with years of research that's there for you whenever you need it: http://rewindselector.bwlng.com
Using the "Find" feature in Word, you can search for any song title and info about it. For these two I can tell you:
New Realization: One of my favorite songs ever. 100% original as far as I know. The version on the Box Set is better. Go buy that ASAP.
Don't Push: This song is a patchwork of musical tribute by Sublime, especially with the parts starting "If I was Bob Marley...". From the text --
Don't Push ---- Could You Be Loved (Bob Marley)
Don't Push ---- Comfortably Numb (Pink Floyd)
Don't Push ---- Buffalo Soldier (Bob Marley) [Stolen from Africa]
Don't Push ---- Lookin' Down the Barrel (Beastie Boys) [Racism is schism]
Don't Push ---- Up All Night (Boomtown Rats)[Up all night]
Don't Push ---- Wake the Town (Tenor Saw) [Go and wake the town, tell the people the news... tell them reggae music is on the loose)
Don't Push ---- Rough and Rugged (Shinehead) [rough and rugged, I keep my body strong...]
That should help. Check out Rewind Selector and give a shout if you need anything else.
