Subject: brads solos
Question hey andy, its ryan again, i was the one who was asking about brads setup and sound. first off i just wanted to let you know that in a few days i will be getting my new guitar, a american deluxe fat strat, i chose this one over the one yuo suggested simply becuase of the humbucker single coil, single coil, pickups. it will be arctic white, with a maple fret board, straight up jimi hendrix look. ive also decided to get teh roland jc-120, and will probably drop you another question when i get it.
now as to my question i was wondering if you knew any licks that work well with reggae. i have become fairly good with blues solos, but it just doesnt fit over the reggae sound. so any tips or advice you could give me would be great. anything like licks brad used commonly or just licks you know of. or any suggestions on how to get good at soloing.
thanks and peace
ryan
Answer 1st thing ryan is to buy sublime tab books...they will help you so much with the style and actual solo's he plays..and they will be note for note.
make sure also to run your new strat through a jc-120 to make sure you get the sounds you need/want out of it.I think it's a great amp..but it's not for everyone..but hey it sounds Fing awesome..andy summers from the police uses one..and as you know he kills on guitar..that guys sound/rythem is unbelievable.It's just a good idea to run the exact guitar you have thru an amp before buying one,.just to know exactly how it will sound.
Another good book would be ska guitar by dale turner..it's proablly on the net..but it gives ton's of sample chords/solo's..and more importantly how and when to use the solos..it's not and end all be all but for 20 bucks it's a very good book.
To solo in any style you have to play in key with the music..even if it's behind the beat.I'm still learning my self..mainly cause i'm self taught and play more ryth than anything else..being that i'm not in a band i kinda have to to keep the tempo up..but hey if your close to new jersey..drop me a line and we can jam lOL.
One good way to find a groove is to record some chords and solo over top of that..you will see yourself improve faster that way..cause when you hit a note that's wrong it will tell you fast..and when one is right than it will sound like it's mending with the chords/melody.
One thing is also to find out if your playing in the major or minor scale..and depending on which one your in..you solo in that style..start slow and go from there..but most important..feel it..dig what you play..an have fun.Cause sitting hunched over a tab book all day long is for the birds man..i play a lot of funk stuff...and sometimes the solo or shred is not in key or whatnot but it works..aaron duggan from midasyahoo(spelling)-awesome guitarist BTW-he does that all the time..it doesn't have to be in key or in the right scale to sound good..if you play with emotion..and have fun..your playing will get better..i get jammed up sometimes..and instead of getting pissed i'll slap on the reverb,wah,delay,,,or just hang on a note until i get passed the difficulty.
Drop me a line and let me know how your making out,.take care and good luck with the new axe and amp-==-andy=}
