About Matt Maguire
Expertise
I am new to allexperts, but have plenty of knowledge and experience in the realm of Sublime. Guarantee: you will receive an answer within 2 days of posting the question -- I have no feedback so far and would like to build some. I can answer most questions about the band, the significance of the lyrics, the show dates, the unreleased albums and tracks, misinformation, and, above all, I am an expert on their influences and related music.

Experience
I have been a huge fan for 14 years, I ran a server which distributed Sublime's live and unreleased music 24/7 for 4 years, I have answered questions about the band daily for years on their old website, and I know some of the largest collectors in the world. I created the 5 CD bootleg "Rewind Selector" which documents the influences of Sublime and was the topic of a Spin Magazine interview.

Education/Credentials
I did not study music in college, but I majored in English, so I can write a clear response. I worked as a research assistant in the past, so I have skills in research if I need to figure out an answer.

Past/Present Clients
Sublime fans aren't my clients, but I have distributed swag and rare tracks to all those who want them for years at no cost.

Sublime - Bootlegs and year of release

Expert: Matt Maguire - 10/23/2009

Question
QUESTION: Hi Matt. It seems some boots may be hard to pinpoint a date of release since some are collections of songs recorded over a period, some were in a private circle on casette long before anyone else knew they existed, and some are just hard to find any info on. Let me know if this looks right- and please let me know the year Pure Anus was released(on casette).

What I've gathered (correct?)
1995 A Day In The Sun (Live Florida concert)
1995 Contact Buzz (live @ the palace)
95 firecracker lounge
95 fox theatre
96 hollywood swingers
96 dog gone blues
96 shootin' up in beantown (live @ mama kins)
98 Bums Lie
99 The Black Album 1

ANSWER: Eccs:

Incorrect on some of them and I can provide the date as well as the year.

A Day in the Sun was actually a 2-day concert in Indiatlantic, Florida.  3/24/1995 and 3/25/1995.

Contact Buzz is the shorter/video audio version of this show.  I have the soundboard version, uncut. It's 10/21/95.

Firecracker Lounge in Anaheim, CA was near his birthday on 2/2/1995

Fox Theater in Boulder, Colorado was 4/20/1995.

Hollywood Swingers is 2/17/1995

Dog Gone Blues is not a recognized bootleg.  It's a bootleg of a bootleg. Check "Seems So Silly".

Shootin' Up in Beantown was 4/10/1996, right after the WBCN interview.

And now for the ultimate reference list:

Thanks for the question.  Let me know if I can help you with anything else.

QUESTION: nice site. Are you saying contact buzz is a fancied up (volumes adjusted and reverb later added to vocals) album made from the indiatlantic show? Maybe I misinterpreted your answer. I got my info from this back cover pic http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_gPMcfaLPNhA/SB8n3P_inqI/AAAAAAAAB4M/LL-gZonvH04/s400/C...

That is pretty strange about dog gone blues being a bootleg of a bootleg. I really like the collection on that album. I still can't dind any info on pure anus and that site says to be updated soon. Somehow I doubt that. Do you know where these songs came from or when that collection came to be? Thanks alot
- Alex

Answer
I see the confusion.  No, Indiatlantic Florida and Hollywood California at the Palace are separate shows.  What I mean is that "Contact Buzz" is the bootleg name of audio taken from the video of that show at the Palace.  So there exists a video which is what that terrible audio was dubbed from.  I recommend getting the soundboard audio that doesn't click off when Eric breaks a bass string and Brad starts drunkenly rambling about how he wants girls to dance in cages on his tour while Sublime plays.

Dog Gone Blues may not be a bootleg of a bootleg -- a straight copy of It All Seems So Silly in the Long Run -- I may be thinking of Live Shooter or some other bootleg.  But Dog Gone Blues came out when all of the songs on it were on other pre-existing bootleg albums; that's why I don't know much about it.  It's like LBC 90804 or other compilations.

Pure Anus was unofficially released by and to friends of the Skunk family.  It traveled around on cassette and was dubbed tape to tape (hence the bassy quality). It came from a variety of sources, but there is still speculation.  Doin Time Hip Hop Dub, for example -- no one can positively identify the rappers in that song.  Some say it's the Heiroglyphics, but having asked Del the Funky Homosapien myself, I know that not to be the case.
