About GMan
Expertise
I can answer any/all questions in regard to "sublime". I was down with the band and Skunk Records since 1991; the year they released their second cassette, "Jah Won't Pay the Bills" until the end in 1996. I have answers to all of your questions about their music, their releases, their unreleased music, their promos, merchandise, and the like. You ask it, I'll answer it.

Experience
I have extensive knowledge of "sublime" from their origin(s)through the end of their career. I have been involved with "sublime" from the early years when Kelly Vargas was on Drums, I know everything that there is to know about their early career, their rise to fame in the early 90's, & on through until May 96' when Brad passed away. I specialize in the band's merchandise. I have been collecting everything that is "sublime" since the beginning and have extensive knowledge on the subject. They released an unparalleled amount of DYI promotional merchandise before being signed to MCA & I would be glad to help you find out what piece of their BIG puzzle you are holding on to and/or what you'd like to get your hand on!

Publications
I am a regular on all of the sublime chat boards and was a constant on the now defunct sublime board, "The Curb" where many people considered me the "go to guy" for information on "sublime" and the rarities that they left behind for us all.

Sublime - 40 Oz. To Freedom version that totally has me stumped...

Expert: GMan - 6/7/2009

Question
Hey there GMan, surely you've gotta be able to identify this one...I was in a record store that is Indie to the core...came across this and that, all the singles at various prices, a copy of The Black Album, a well-used copy of Sinsemilla, standard fare, until I came across this version of 40 Oz To Freedom...Listen to my description: For some reason, this version has the 'Lower case text' style of the band name above the Sun Face,
and there's an oldschool PA label (large sticker right hand corner).

THIS is what gets me, I wrote this down, trust me, the Track Listing was as follows:

1. WAITING FOR MY RUCA
2. 40 OZ. TO FREEDOM
3. DON'T PUSH
4. LET'S GO GET STONED
5. NEW THRASH
6. POOL SHARK
7. SECRET TWEEKER PAD
8. GREATEST HITS
9. LIVE AT E'S
10. D.J.'S
11. WORK THAT WE DO
12. SAW RED
13. ABIN
14. DATE RAPE
15. RIGHT BACK
16. MARY
17. RALEIGH SOLILOQUY PT III
18. BADFISH
19. ALL YOU NEED

GMan, that's weird to me, have you ever saw a version of 40 Oz with 19 tracks?

Anyway, the code on the back was:
GASSD11349

I don't remember if there was a barcode or not, don't think there was though.

Can you help me with this one? Either a super rare import version or new discovery? I don't know, but, I have to find out what this means because I put it somewhere hidden at the Record store, and want to know what this coule be before I buy it (has an Import price by the way).

All I can tell you is that I asked the record store clerk about this 'collection' of Sublime CD's he had in stock...this 40 oz version was sold to the record store along with some 10 other bootlegs from some guy from Canada who spoke mainly German and not too much English...
Germany and Canada? Any hints for you there?
Anyway, again, GMan, would greatly appreciate your help here. Happy Sunday, Peace.

Answer
Hey Nick,

Sorry for the slight delay. I was in Humbolt all weekend..  ;-)

Anyway, that's what we call the "Canadian Import 40 oz. to Freedom" or the "Canadian 40 oz.". It is a compilation of tracks from "40 oz." & "Robbin" similar to the U.S. release "13 fl. oz.". It was produced in 1995 & is out of print; although it is easily attainable in Canada to this day.

This CD was made to increase sublime's notoriety in Canada prior to the release of the "S/T" album. MCA had big plans for the "S/T" album and wanted to get sublime more well known throughout Canada. Sublime was too busy to tour all of Canada at the time, so they came up with a plan to market their "best" work from the first two albums & get it out to the public to increase demand for "new" music by sublime.

I think it worked...

The CD should look like this:

As far as who was the guy who sold them these bootlegs,... I have an idea but it would depend where you are in the world to try and figure that out; although I'm not really sure why you would want to or need to know that.   lol  It was probably my friend Dennis.

I hope this helps.

"All Sublime All The Time"

Peace,
GMan
