AboutGMan Expertise I can answer any/all questions in regard to "sublime". I was down with the band and Skunk Records since 1991; the year they released their second cassette, "Jah Won't Pay the Bills" until the end in 1996. I have answers to all of your questions about their music, their releases, their unreleased music, their promos, merchandise, and the like. You ask it, I'll answer it.
Experience I have extensive knowledge of "sublime" from their origin(s)through the end of their career. I have been involved with "sublime" from the early years when Kelly Vargas was on Drums, I know everything that there is to know about their early career, their rise to fame in the early 90's, & on through until May 96' when Brad passed away. I specialize in the band's merchandise. I have been collecting everything that is "sublime" since the beginning and have extensive knowledge on the subject. They released an unparalleled amount of DYI promotional merchandise before being signed to MCA & I would be glad to help you find out what piece of their BIG puzzle you are holding on to and/or what you'd like to get your hand on!
Publications I am a regular on all of the sublime chat boards and was a constant on the now defunct sublime board, "The Curb" where many people considered me the "go to guy" for information on "sublime" and the rarities that they left behind for us all.
Question Where does Jakob James Nowell live and is he trying to follow his dad's footsteps and make music? Also was brad a cool guy or was he a hotshot or just straight up awesome?
Answer Hey Adam,
Jakob is still in his teens & he lives with Troy in San Diego. I'm not too sure about where he's headed in the music industry but I heard that he does play guitar.
and, Brad was a great guy. But, he was also an asshole because of drugs. When he HAD drugs, he was totally mellow and cool (but also "spacey" and shit sometimes), but when he didn't have any (namely heroin) he could be very mean spirited and evil. I suppose everyone that has a habit like that can be.
But, yes, he was straight up awesome. His talent was what made him such a badass. He could just be sitting there with an acoustic guitar and he's bust out with some shit & just blow your mind with the freestyles that he's come up with. You would just be sitting there transfixed and say nothing. It was awesome.
Overall, especially before the drug use started, he was just a really sweet guy. VERY intelligent. Kind hearted and smart. But, once he started using heroin, everyone would wonder if they ever knew him at all... he was a totally different person.
Watch the "Stories, Tales, Lies" video and that scene where they are on the Warped Tour & he is just sitting there on the tour bus staring out the window.... That was what he was like a lot of the time from 1993 on to the time of his death. That shit would make him feel good, but it would rob him of his creativity. You will also notice that his guitar solos are almost non-existent after about 1993.
He would say he just didn't "feel like it", but really it was just that he was already thinking of his next fix when they were playing live or he couldn't play them cause he was too high. It got to a point where he didn't enjoy playing the live shows & if you watch shows from that time, you'll notice it. The ones where he is all smiles and having fun are mostly from when he was fresh outta rehab-ing himself, had a new lease on life or when he was clean for a while.
