About Matt Maguire
Expertise
I am new to allexperts, but have plenty of knowledge and experience in the realm of Sublime. Guarantee: you will receive an answer within 2 days of posting the question -- I have no feedback so far and would like to build some. I can answer most questions about the band, the significance of the lyrics, the show dates, the unreleased albums and tracks, misinformation, and, above all, I am an expert on their influences and related music.

Experience
I have been a huge fan for 14 years, I ran a server which distributed Sublime's live and unreleased music 24/7 for 4 years, I have answered questions about the band daily for years on their old website, and I know some of the largest collectors in the world. I created the 5 CD bootleg "Rewind Selector" which documents the influences of Sublime and was the topic of a Spin Magazine interview.

Education/Credentials
I did not study music in college, but I majored in English, so I can write a clear response. I worked as a research assistant in the past, so I have skills in research if I need to figure out an answer.

Past/Present Clients
Sublime fans aren't my clients, but I have distributed swag and rare tracks to all those who want them for years at no cost.

Sublime - Brad's Brown Guitar

Expert: Matt Maguire - 8/17/2009

Question
Hey I have been a huge fan of Sublime and Brad for a very long time and I have wanted to build an exact replica of Brad's custom Dan Macdonald Brown guitar for quite a while.  I was wondering if you could tell me basically everything about the Brown guitar and what it is made of. Thank you and I hope to hear from you soon.

Answer
Hi Sam.

I have answered this question before, so search my past answers and you'll find how Paul Wiggens of the UK made his.  It's not exact, and neither is the one sold on eBay just the other day.  I think the people who really know every part on it are both dead (Brad and more recently, Dan MacDonald), but the eBay one has the following setup:

http://cgi.ebay.com/SUBLIME-Brown-Guitar-project-rare-Bradley-Nowell-SUB-1_W0QQi...

"a modified Ernie Ball Musicman SUB (Sub-lime get it!) guitar.  I started this guitar project out of the love and influence of Sublime and Brad Nowell's music.  As most of us probably know and heard of the famous "Brown guitar" - Brad's friend, Dan MacDonald built it for him.  So I messed around and built my own modified MacDonald inspired Brown guitar or actually took an Ernie Ball SUB 1 HH guitar, stripped it, reshaped it, stained and clear coated the body.  The pickups are an Ibanez QM2 pickup in the neck position and Bill Lawrence USA in the bridge position. For those who don't know who Bill Lawrence is, he used to make pickups for Gibson back in the day!  His pickups ROCK and are well known for their quality!  The rest of the guitar is all original in meaning that the neck, hardware and electronics (minus the pickups) are all original.

  If any of you ever played a SUB guitar you would know that these guitars play like butter, stays in tune even after using the whammy bar!  The guitar has killer locking tuners, changing strings is really easy and stays in tune for long time - nice design on the tuners.  A well built guitar by Ernie Ball Musicman Company, the guitar was originally made in San Luis Obispo, California at the Ernie Ball factory, so the guitar is USA made!  Pretty cool that the guitar is made in Brad's home state.  It is really light weight and sounds awesome!  Truly don't even want to get rid of her but need the cash.

 Included in this auction is the original Musicman custom hardshell case, whammy bar and Ernie Ball Musicman booklet.  The case has a little ding on it from the moron I bought it from off ebay a few years back. The guy shipped the guitar in its hardshell case without a box?  Can you say cheap or dumb ass?  This is not the first time I have sent a guitar so have no worries the guitar will be shipped professionally.   It will be packaged well to insure its safe arrival.  This Guitar was a project and is sold as is.  I plugged her in this morning and found my self jammin' for a while, one last time.  She sounds so mean, so good!  The guitar will be missed."

Music Man SUB 1 Guitar HH Features:

* Poplar body
* Standard MusicMan-tremolo bridge.
* 25-1/2" scale
* 10" radius
* 22 frets, high profile, medium width
* 1-5/8" width at nut, 2-1/4" at last fret
* Rosewood fretboard
* Black painted maple neck and headstock
* Adjustable truss rod
* 5-bolt attachment
* Volume and tone controls
* 2 custom humbuckers pickups  (Ibanez qm2 and Bill Lawrence USA)
* 3-way toggle pickup selector

Best of luck if you build this thing, but don't do it to make money -- it sold for only $170.

Matt
