AboutMatt Maguire Expertise I am new to allexperts, but have plenty of knowledge and experience in the realm of Sublime. Guarantee: you will receive an answer within 2 days of posting the question -- I have no feedback so far and would like to build some.
I can answer most questions about the band, the significance of the lyrics, the show dates,
the unreleased albums and tracks, misinformation, and, above all, I am an expert on their
influences and related music.
Experience I have been a huge fan for 14 years, I ran a server which distributed Sublime's live and unreleased music 24/7 for 4 years, I have answered questions about the band daily for years on their old website, and I know some of the largest collectors in the world. I created the 5 CD bootleg "Rewind Selector" which documents the influences of Sublime and was the topic of a Spin Magazine interview.
Education/Credentials I did not study music in college, but I majored in English, so I can write a clear response. I worked as a research assistant in the past, so I have skills in research if I need to figure out an answer.
Past/Present Clients Sublime fans aren't my clients, but I have distributed swag and rare tracks to all those who want them for years at no cost.
Expert: Matt Maguire Date: 11/6/2007 Subject: What is the 89 Vision?
Question I heard Brad sing about the 89 vision.do you know what he was talkin about?
Answer This is from a complex study of Sublime's influences which I wrote up to accompany an album of influence study. Both can be found at rewindselector.bwlng.com.
What is the 89 Vision? The borrowed lyric in the Sublime song is out of context and tells next to nothing, because it has nothing to do with Bradley’s anal fetishes (I am referring to the song 89 Vision from the bootleg Pure Anus). It is also mentioned in Jailhouse (“…89 vision, we didn’t fuss or no fight…”) but this time in context. The term refers to 1989 and KRS-One’s vision of non-violence in hip hop/the black community. His 1987 album Criminal Minded is said to be one of the original gangter hip hop albums, but his DJ and the other part of BDP Scott La Rock was gunned down. Shortly thereafter a fan was killed during a fight at his concert and it permanently changed his outlook on hip hop music. Kris Parker aka the Blastmaster aka the Teacher aka KRS-ONE began preaching against violence starting with his single Self Destruction in 1989. Thus the ’89 Vision was born. Guess who was on that single: Just I.C.E...another major Sublime influence.
Hopefully that answers your question and give you interest in checking out my Sublime album.
