AboutMatt Maguire Expertise I am new to allexperts, but have plenty of knowledge and experience in the realm of Sublime. Guarantee: you will receive an answer within 2 days of posting the question -- I have no feedback so far and would like to build some.
I can answer most questions about the band, the significance of the lyrics, the show dates,
the unreleased albums and tracks, misinformation, and, above all, I am an expert on their
influences and related music.
Experience I have been a huge fan for 14 years, I ran a server which distributed Sublime's live and unreleased music 24/7 for 4 years, I have answered questions about the band daily for years on their old website, and I know some of the largest collectors in the world. I created the 5 CD bootleg "Rewind Selector" which documents the influences of Sublime and was the topic of a Spin Magazine interview.
Education/Credentials I did not study music in college, but I majored in English, so I can write a clear response. I worked as a research assistant in the past, so I have skills in research if I need to figure out an answer.
Past/Present Clients Sublime fans aren't my clients, but I have distributed swag and rare tracks to all those who want them for years at no cost.
Expert: Matt Maguire Date: 6/21/2007 Subject: Brad and Jail
Question I have listened to Brad's jail songs before turning myself into jail to do time on a few occasions (usually in Detroit's Felony Jail (Wayne County Jail)). Did he really go to jail? If so, for what? I saw someone else post a question regarding this issue. My guess would be property crimes relating to heroin abuse.
Answer John --
Heidi Sigmund Cuda's book "Crazy Fool: Portrait of a Punk" tells some dark tales that definitely don't glamorize Brad's life under the influence. Here's a part of an interview with Bud:
"[Brad] sent one of our friends to the hospital. He always wanted his friends to party with him, and he shot someone up. There is a thing called "junkie etiquette": a) you don't puncture girls, and b) you don't turn people on who have never done it before.
"I had a heart-to-heart talk with Brad and told him, 'These are the rules, whether you like it or not. If I hear you are getting girls high or getting virgins high, I'm going to beat the tar out of you.'
"A couple of weeks went by, and there was an incident at the house where he was partying with this girl and she ended up OD'ing -- this was at the Quincy house where Mike lives. Brad was living up on the roof apartment there and he overdosed this girl. He actually went to jail and she went to the emergency room. Luckily, she came out of it. Brad was jailed for possession and contributing. I went over to his house the day he got out of jail, walked up the steps, and just laid into him. I ended up kicking his ass pretty good, sealed his eye shut. He went to the doctor for a torn cornea."
I'm sure there are plenty of other instances, but most likely many are drug related. Heroin is a terrible thing.
