Question Hello i hope you can help me. Im new to this computer stuff so i have hardly any knoweledge yet. What my question is is this. I have Windows Me edition which when i bought my computer was already on here. Well i bought Evidence Eliminator the other day and it says on there that certain things wont work with Windows Me edition such as deleting hidden files in my hard drive. I dont have any naughty things hidden there but just want my privacy and also want more space on my drive. So i would like to know how i could get Windows Me off here and install Windows 98 second edition as ive heard its very good better than Windows Me infact. I see where it says format my hard drive but im scared ill lose my games and music i have already saved on here. So if there is a way of saving my games to floppy disk so i dont lose it all i would love to know. Also one final thing i searched the Microsoft site for Windows 98 second edition which is supposed to be a free download so i can put it on here but i could not find it anywhere. So if you can help a total beginer with this problem i would be really grateful to you. P.S. if possible could you give youre answer in plain english as im not technical at all. Thanks a lot to you. From Wayne
Answer I think you have three basic questions.
1) Where do I get Windows 98 SE?
2) How do I save everything I've done since I got my PC?
3) How do I install Windows 98 SE?
Lets take these in order.
1) I do not know if Windows 98 SE is available as a free download. I would be extremely surprised if Microsoft was giving away it's main money maker. You may have confused it with Internet Explorer, which uses the abbreviation IE. It IS a free download.
2) I do not know what software was originally installed on your PC when you got it. If there is anything in addition to Windows installed, you will need to make sure you have backup copies before reinstalling Windows.
For example, if your PC came with MS-Word and you have written several documents since you got it. You will need to have a copy of MS-Word to install from and you will need to save all of your documents to floppies before reinstalling anything.
Once you reinstall the OS, everything on the disk is lost.
This is not something that should probably be done by someone that is unfamiliar with the consequences and how to avoid them.
3) Installing Windows is fairly straight forward. But I am really not a Windows expert. You probably need to speak with someone in the Windows area of AllExperts to get the details.
I hope this information helps.
I am an expert with the Sun Operating System, not Windows. I would really recommend that you get with someone that is a Windows expert.
