Subject: Internet Connection Sharing - Windows 2000 to Solaris

Question
Heyas, John,

Thanx for taking my question.  I'll try to make it sound intelligent.  I have a computer running Windows 2000, connected with a broadband DSL modem connection (modem only, no router) that utilizes 2000's connection sharing.

My 2000 box sets itself up as a gateway (I think) and it works with my other PC's running Windows.  I also have a Sparcstation 20 running Solaris 2.7, Sunos 5.7, that I have on my desk (I have root so I can change stuff)  My stepfather is a unix system administrator for Solaris, but he doesn't know how to do this: share the DSL connection from my Windows 2000 computer to my Sparc station 20.

The DSL doesn't have a static ip, it's dynamic.  I've been told that I'd have to get some kind of NAT software to do it, but I'd like to know which files I'd have to edit or if it can be done at all.  Can it be done with software ?  Should I purchase a dsl router ?  I'm just a home user, but I'd like to start shells on my Sun (it's a great computer).

Thanx,
Tim

Answer
I think this question is outside my area of expertise.  I have not done a lot of work integrating Windows and UNIX.

Unfortunately I do not have a whole lot of resources that I can think of directing you to that might be able to help.

Just for starters, I would check out searchsolaris.com, and docs.sun.com to see if there are any documents that describe this.

Thanks,
John Storta, Jr.
