Question Hi!
I'm a real newbie in the computer field (have only been in it less than a year). I recently got a good buy (?) on a Sun SPARC5 work station (I believe it's either Solaris 5 or 7 that's loaded on it). After it boots up, I get the following error message "rpc lockd. cannot contact status monitor". This error message cascades diagonally across the screen, and the system is completely locked up. Any thoughts on this? Thanks! Shawn R. Daniel
Answer Hi Shawn,
well you'll have to try a few different things here to get to the bottom of this one !
Firstly, I'll need to know exactly what version of Solaris you are running. To check this you should type 'uname -r' at the command prompt.
Now, I'll also need to know if this machine is networked, and if so, how it is networked ?
Besides checking these two things, could you also check the following:
is rpc running? type 'ps -ef | grep rpc
is lockd running? type 'ps -ef | grep lockd
If as you say, you are getting this error message after the machine boots up, you can try one of two things to get to a command prompt:
try pressing the 'Ctrl' button and the letter 'c'
if this does not interrupt the messages on the screen, then press the 'stop' key and the 'a' key. Doing this should bring you to what is known as the 'go' prompt or single user mode.
I hope I'm not confusing you too much already ! So, if you try this much first, and then get back to me, we should be able to solve this problem for you.
Also, When you type all the commands above to find out the information that I am looking for, you might copy the output as it appears on your screen, and paste it in to your response...
