Question
what is the difference between solaris 2.6 and SunOS 5.6?

Answer
Hi!

There is no difference, Solaris 2.6 is the product name. SunOS is for historical reasons, before solaris was a product name everything was called SunOS, when someone say SunOS they usually mean solaris 1.x, which in fact was SunOS 4.x. So basically they have kept SunOS 5.6 for script compability reasons.

SunOS 4.x = Solaris 1.x
SunOS 5.5 = Solaris 2.5
SunOS 5.6 = Solaris 2.6
SunOS 5.7 = Solaris 7
SunOS 5.8 = Solaris 8

etc etc :)

Hope this helps
