Question
Hi Windlover - I recently started windsurfing, current level: I'm in the harness and footstraps (beginner position) on a Starboard Start and have sailed in winds up to 10 knots. I have not experienced planing yet. My next step will be on a Starboard Go in 15 to 20 knot winds. Any hot tips on how to survive this impending calamity?

Answer
Hey Fritz,

I wouldn't look at it as an 'impending calamity' but more as a new experience and adventure. Just try to take it easy until you are able to get on a plane. Once on a plane, a whole new series of events will be happening. One bit of advice to impart is to remember to release the pull of your back hand whenever you are starting to feel overpowered. This will spill wind and allow you to maintain control of the sail. There will be times that you will get pulled over and sometimes actually launched over the front of the board. Just remember to stay relaxed and let it happen. We've all done it and will do it again. It is just part of learning to sail more advanced conditions.

Check out this site www.windsurfingmag.com under the instruction area for a ton of information on beginner, intermediate, and advanced instruction. Read each and every article in the beginner and intermediate areas to get great advice on raising your level of sailing.
Welcome to the wonderful world of windsurfing.

Hope this helps.
Keep on sailing,
Windlover
