AboutDavid Scott Expertise Questions regarding the advisability of different kinds of modifications to Samurai/Sidekick/Tracker or various kinds of off-road usage. I will not attempt to do more than provide links for questions about other Suzukis such as Vitara, Grand Vitara, etc. I may or may not give generalized advice for newer models, but have no experience regarding newer models, and will not attempt to give more than the most generalized answers for questions regarding vehicles later than '93 manufacture. I will however, if possible, provide a link that will help you contact a professional in your region.
Experience I've been a professional mechanic for over thirty five years, live in the center of the Rocky Mountains, and have been active in exploring the old mining/4wd roads for decades. I've specific experience with Samurai modification, because that's my personal vehicle.
Education/Credentials Thirty five years of advanced, intensive classes for experienced professionals only. Manufacturer seminars and training classes averaging four to six weeks per year. I'm now a professional heavy duty fleet mechanic, and no longer deal with issues such as MIL (check engine) lights

Question Hello..
I only want to drive my Samurai on the street and would like to gear it higher. I purchased a used Tracker rear end and would like to do away with the transfer gearbox and run the driveshaft direct from the transmission to the rear end. I would like to use the Tracker rear end so I can still keep my early Ford truck slotted alloy wheels.
As you know, the problem with this setup is the low ratio of the Tracker (5:12 I think vs 3:73 in the Samurai) so I would not realize any net gain in higher gearing. Will the Samurai gears fit the Tracker housing/axles? If not, is there higher geared ring and pinion available that will fit in the Tracker rear end?
By the way, I am running a strong 1.6 engine and do not want the four wheel drive for my use. I have owned this car for quiet some time and would love it even more if I could get the rpm's down on the road..with the high rpm's at 65 mph, it burns as much gas as my full size pickup.
I just finished installing a Tracker power steering system that works great. My next phase when I get the gearing worked out is to install a 1.8 Corolla 3Tc hemi engine and automatic that I already have. Do you have any thoughts on eliminating the front differential or installing a totally different axle to provide more clearance for the engine...I do not want to raise the body.
Thanks, David, for your time..I look forward to hearing from you!
Best wishes,

Answer You could probably use Samurai diff gears. Ask at izook.com at one of the companies on "links" that deals in gearing changes. While I don't know of my own experience, I've been told that you can do that.
You could get a longer driveshaft fabricated.
As for the front axle, I have no idea, I have never attempted a modification of that sort.
